Manchester United optimistic about signing Cesc Fabregas with Gareth Bale next on their wish-list. Manchester United are aiming to secure the £26 million signing of Cesc Fabregas in the coming days before pursuing an audacious attempt to lure Gareth Bale to Old Trafford.
Cesc Fabregas |
Having lodged a formal offer for Fabregas on Monday, United are still to receive a response from Barcelona about their intentions with the former Arsenal captain.
But there is a growing confidence at Manchester United that a deal for Cesc Fabregas can be struck - potentially during their two-game trip to Japan next week - prior to a more challenging move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Bale.
“I am in contact with the chief exec, Ed Woodward, who has been dealing with it (the Fabregas bid) just now,” David Moyes said. “I’ll hopefully know a little more in the next day or so and I may have a bit more information about how it’s going.
“But as far as players we are looking to bring in, we are working hard to do that and make some additions to the squad. Hopefully there will be some good news in the not too distant future.
With Barcelona keen to raise funds by offloading players and reducing their wage bill, combined with Fabregas’s willingness to return to the Premier League with Manchester United Moyes is optimistic about his prospects of signing the 26-year-old.
Publicly, the Spanish club continue to insist he is not for sale. “Barca will not entertain any offers for Cesc. He is completely non-transferable,” said sports vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, but United are unconcerned by that.
Personal terms are understood to be unlikely to prove problematic with Fabregas, but senior figures at Manchester United are aware that their hopes of persuading Tottenham to sell Gareth Bale. who could cost in the region of £60 million, are dependent on the resolve of the White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy to do business.
Under the previous regime of Ferguson and chief executive David Gill, United believed that Daniel Levy had manoeuvred the club into paying excessive fees for Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov, while interest in former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric never progressed to the stage of a formal offer due to a lack of encouragement from the Tottenham hierarchy.
Daniel Levy is understood to be similarly determined to retain Bale, but with Real Madrid no longer interested in the Wales international, United believe that this summer presents the optimum opportunity to sign the player.
Manchester United are yet to lodge a bid for Gareth Bale but having inherited a squad with a midfield depleted by the retirement of Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher’s ongoing battle against a bowel condition, David Moyes admits that his priority is to bolster his midfield options.
“When I got the job, I was made aware of what could possibly be done to improve things and signing a midfield player was one area we thought we could possibly add to the squad.” Moyes said. “At the moment that’s probably our priority, to try and add a player in that position.
“I think it’s hard to get top quality players who can come in and affect your team. That’s why we’re trying to go for what we see as the right players and the best players.
“If you’re a player and you’re brought up to play football, you look out of the window and see Old Trafford, if you’ve got any ambitions about being a footballer, and you’re a top one, then I think you’ll want to play for Manchester United.”
Manchester United are due to face the A-League All-Stars at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on Saturday - a game which saw all 83,000 tickets sold within 45 minutes of going on sale last December.
David Moyes is set to hand Robin van Persie his first pre-season appearance following the Dutch forward’s extended summer break and he admits that he has already been impressed his contribution in training this week.
“I got to see him this week for the first time and his control, touch and awareness in the small games is excellent,” Moyes said. “I’ve really been impressed by his professionalism, too.
“He has never complained and he has worked hard. We’re trying to get him into a position where he can do what he did last year – score goals for United and be a big influence on the team.
“He was a massively important part of Manchester United last season and I’m hoping he’ll have just as big an influence this season.
“We’ll probably only use Robin in the second half because we’ve overtrained him this week to make sure he builds up his fitness.
